O&M Diaries: Boone Oakley
Categories: General, Video

While going through adsoftheworld.com today, I came across this kick-ass innovative site. It’s for an ad agency called Boone Oakley–a relatively unknown agency from North Carolina. But, the site is so innovative, I’m surprised they aren’t bigger. What they’ve done is that they’ve made their site using only inter-linked YouTube videos. So, typing in booneoakley.com redirects you to their ‘homepage’ which is in fact, a tongue in cheek animation. From there, you can navigate by using either the timeline, or a set of links. Don’t get what I’m saying? Here, let me put up their site here:

Yeah, that is their site! Pretty neat I’d say. But, it does have one big drawback (which was pointed out by Ankur). Video content isn’t and can’t be indexed by search engines. So, effectively, that means zero search engine traffic for Boone Oakley.
But then, when your work is as audacious (and effective) as the work they did for Ruby Tuesday, or as tongue in cheek as their site, do they really need that search engine traffic? Surely, word of mouth will be enough. Specially with such a kick-ass concept for a site! This really speaks volumes for their creativity, that most basic of prerequisites for n ad agency.
Not only that, I feel (and my boss, like everyone else at Ogilvy I showed this site to, seconds that) that this site and the Ruby Tuesday campaign should be up for some serious Cannes recognition. Surely that’ll catapult these people into the big league. I really hope it does…in the meantime, enjoy the site, and if you like it, spread the cheer!

Hahahaha! Check out their sitemap here. Even that is damn hilarious!

Hey, thanks for the post. Glad everyone is enjoying it so much.

Actually I think the site is pretty solid on SEO, certainly no worse than your average flash driven agency portfolio I would think.

No, the video isn’t SEO friendly, no video is but yet they are still easy to find and that’s because YouTube has a pretty intricate tagging set up. That, coupled with inbound linking, the content of the actual page itself ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Elo7WeIydh8 ) and the domain it lives in (Google owns Youtube) help out as well.

Finally … the idea really isn’t to be central but to be everywhere. And I’m not sure how all the blog entries and embeds and their specific content factor in to search algorithms.

Now granted, if it sucked we’d be in real trouble. 😉 Thanks for the post and the thoughts.

  3. The sitemap is hardly readable. Is it too much to expect an in-focus shot, taken with a tripod and at a resolution at which things are readable?
