This is the first draft of a screenplay for a 5-shot movie exploring how a manic-depressive loner finds his emotional release by pretending that he’s the king of an illusionary land. It’s a part of a college assignement. Once again, feedback will be appreciated.

Strong influence of Memento. Why does everything keep blacking out? Any special significance or just for being artsy?

I meant blacking out not only in the sense of fade to black but the jump cuts too. Oh, and the Lord of the Flies association isn’t there now that it’s obvious he’s imagining.

Still, it isn’t obvious he’s a manic depressive. Maybe it could be shown…oh, I dunno, he’s slitting his wrists or something while imagining everyone is bowing down in front of him. I would have suggested Aztec style executions but that will be difficult to shoot.

very funny ankur. and, jump cut has been used just once–the others are normal cuts used in all movies. the jump cut was placed there to condense the action, plus indicate the change in tone–from the loneliness of the first shot to the more urgent second shot…

Well you do need to show he’s a manic depressive…

“Signs and symptoms of the depressive phase of bipolar disorder include persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, guilt, anger, isolation, or hopelessness; disturbances in sleep and appetite; fatigue and loss of interest in usually enjoyable activities; problems concentrating; loneliness, self-loathing, apathy or indifference; depersonalization; shyness or social anxiety; irritability…”

now compare this with how i’ve described the character when the first shot opens:
the guy’s sitting alone, with his expression saying that he doesn’t want to be near any person…
i think that establishes a certain level of manic depression…

No it doesn’t! He could be sad due to various reasons, a loner….there are many reasons. Manic depressive is a completely different diagnosis. One scene isn’t going to show that.
